To be honest, it's always been one of those 'tommorow' projects. however, after watching the DVD of Firefly, I'm probably going to set up a developers journal and just start porting stuff across until it's done.
It's also loosley based on 'Open Space', the core idea being that space travel is very cheap to implement.
I don't know about cheap ... sure, once you've got a ship it Seems to be reasonably self- sustaining, but I think that's more because ships are quite expensive and rare, so you can charge a lot for a simple transport job, than because they're cheap to run.
Personally I was thinking it would work better as a planet bound game ... maybe set on a planet like Persephone. or even a smaller backwater colony.
To me part of the charm of FF was that it wasn't Star Wars or Star Trek - it was about the characters, not the setting (ok - that's probably actually closer to the Star Wars). I agree with Andy, get on with it, and seriously consider setting planetside - easier to phys-rep convincingly too.
