Apparently Jim Davis set out from the very beginning to make Garfield as middle of the road as humanly possible, something you would chuckle at out of habit and then immediately forget. Sort of subliminal, or rather background noise, advertising. Any time the character was on the verge of becoming too prominent, he would cull some merchandise - those Garfield sucker toys weren't pulled because of poor sales, but because they were too popular.
