Just when everything was going so well ...

So yesterday we went to look at houses. This part of the day did not go so well. Two of the houses had been sold, and the third one - the one we actually had an appointment to see - was not where we expected, so we drove around for half an hour, frequently stopping to consult maps, until we found it. By which time the man from the agency had been and gone. Still, no great loss, it was in a shitty area and looked crappy.

Then we went to the estate agents and talked motgages. After abount an hour we decided NatWest was probably best for a 100% mortgage (which the Halifax, though otherwise good, do not do - the most you can get there is 97%). Mostly because they have a special First Time Buyer's mortgage whereby you can add up to £1000 of the legal costs and so forth to the end of the mortgage. So you're borrowing more, but you have a bit more cash in hand for frivolities like furtiture and such. With the landlady on our current place happy to extend the lease until either we found a place or she sold it, we seemed sorted.

Unfortunately we've had a call from the landlady saying she's changed her mind and she wants us out by the 4th of next month. (I suspect an uninhabited house will be easier to sell.) While not technically breaching any of the things she agreed to - she said she'd give us a month's notice before she wantd us out, which she has done - it's still bloody annoying. We have to find temporary accomodation while we continue househunting.

stsquad, which I have to say sounds very much like a plan with no flaws. He's got loads of storage space and spare rooms and could probably do with the extra rent following last month's sad departure. Will talk with him later; he's on his way over to give Katy "eviction hugs". It would mean moving all the crap twice, but given the circumstances I'm not going to complain about that.

ADDITIONAL: Have spoken with Alex, he seems quite happy to let us squat in his house for a few weeks (with discussion of rent if period becomes longer than that, which I am certain it will, with conveyancing being the way it is). In a way it's nice to half a "halfway house" with a month of moving time; in the past, moving from rental to rental, we've had to move in one or two days. So over the next four weeks we're going to box everything up and slowly ferry it to Alex's house - and my Mum's house, since again, it's available and I'm going there regularly anyway so I'd be a fool not to. We are going over there now, to clear space in the cellar and also help with decorating. All is well, and well, and all manner of things will be well.
