Midgard?

So I'm toying with the idea of going to Midgard this weekend. There's one or two sticking points, resolution of which would swing it.

TRAVEL: I'm not fantastically keen on driving. It is a fair old way, and I am lazy. And I don't know the way, having slept for much of the journey during Week Of Kit. Offers of lifts would sweeten the deal considerably, but I'd probably be able to cope with it if the worst came to the worst. (Though it would cut into my City of Heroes time, which is slim enough already.)

SLEEP: I'd need crash space. Alright, that's probably not a massive one, because everyone who lives in Sunderland is lovely and it doesn't actually require any effort on their part (like driving does). But, though more easily resolved, it's probably more mission critical than the driving one, since I'm not going to sleep in the car.
UPDATE: [livejournal.com profile] bacony has apparently secured me crash space on [livejournal.com profile] ed_fortune's floor. Which is nice.

CHARACTER: I'm having trouble settling on stats. I want to play a big dumb ox, and my first instinct was just Strength, Mighty Thews, Stout and Stalwart. (Lack of status isn't a problem, I'd be playing an indentured servant / bodyguard for [livejournal.com profile] bacony.) Then I started checking out the skills in more detail. Apparently Improvised Weapons can't be raised above a "Single" damage call, which throws half the point of Strength/Mighty Thews out of the window. Yes, I'd still be able to beat anyone in an arm-wrestling contest, but my powergamer instincts are shrieking that I could blow 50% of my character points on such a trivial ability. I thought about dropping MT - or possibly Stalwart - in favour of a weapon skill, but I'm wracked with indecision ... Use Martial Weapon is probably my best bet, because the Strength skills allow you to double your damage call instead of doing +1, and a double-handed Martial weapon lets you do doubles naturally (so strength takes it to Quad, n times a day). Of course then I'd be a fool to drop Mighty Thews, making Stalwart the choice ... but, how can I bring myself to drop body hits? As an "always on" skill, they're potentially more useful than being able to do a bit more damage a few times a day ... RRGH it is an eternal logic circle in my head.

Other skills that would suit the character are Smite, Immovable and Valour (he's too stupid to be afraid).

I am leaning towards keeping the initial Might & Stalwart combo, because It's all about the CHARACTER god damnit. Though I suppose we would have to find a reason for [livejournal.com profile] bacony to be travelling with what is essentially an unskilled labourer as her bodyguard... perhaps she's going for "big and intimidating" over "actually capable". An effective deterrent is the best defence, after all.

On a related note, there doesn't seem to be anything on the Midgard site/forums anywhere to indicate that there is any sort of event this weekend. Is it a secret event, or am I looking in the wrong place, or is it all a nefarious subterfuge to lure me to Newcastle? I can think of any number of people up there who would like to have their wicked way with me, so i can't rule it out... [Update: Since writing, a news item about the event has appeared on the Midgard front page. Panic over, no wicked way-having ahoy. Sigh.]

Martial weapon use would require you to have some sort of status. Peasants and slaves don't get Claive-mors.

You can afford Simple weapon (2), stout(4) Stalwart) (6), Strength (5) and still have 3 points left to something like Valour (to dumb to run away) or Health. All of which fit in with a grunt concept. And Swift is dead handy as well.

That still lets you do quad once a day, or double twice.

You're right. Not required. It's a good idea mind you, and it's all percolated in my brain.

GO for the 'lot's of quads until you run out of wyrd' option. I have a big conan sword you can lend. Go on, you know you want to...

RE travel:

For fucks sake, you live north of Leeds - it'll take less than an hour and a half ;-)

Seriously, I've driven up once before, and it's not too bad at all.

If you're in Manchester, I'm giving [livejournal.com profile] bacony a lift from your house anyway, so shouldbe able to squeeze you in. If you're not in Manchester, sorry, can't help - I've already got 2 separate pick-up and drop-off points and I'm not willing to add any more - already looks like I won't be arriving till after 11pm, and don't want this to get any later.

Yep, friday evening.
Have e-mailed you, along with all the other people I need to talk to to convert plan -> reality

Will have to come along to Midgard at some point, but chances are i'll be going down to Cardiff to watch Jo's donkeys valiantly fail to get promoted to the second division this weekend.

Quad once a day is horrible I was doing it and it literally cuts monsters in half so is a really good one to save for when you meet something gnarly. Course it is hard to know when to do it.

Do not underestimate the purchase of Wyrd to start as well - especially if you have a skill to spend it on. Once a day increasing damage by one from martial weapon use + strength + 2 handed weapon = 6 But that is from memory and I don't have the rules to hand so it may be a lie.

[identity profile] nattydreadi.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think the highest possible damage is 8 with a very specific skill set, spending 2 wyrd and being able to do fuck all for the rest of the day.

That is what I was aiming at.

[identity profile] samharber.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I've got 7 hits on my body (a fuckload of armour), so its nice to know that I can still be dropped in one blow if someone tries hard enough.

Munchkin? Me? Shurely shome Mishtake

Me too with my character :)

I looked at the rules, Martial weapon proficiency and specialisation with two hander gives you quad once a day by spending one wyrd. Double with strength once a day for 8. It uses all your once a day skills but cuts dragons in half.

There is no general armour skill as anyone can put leather armour on for some protection

Yep its ablative

Depends I think soft leather is one, properly studded is two and hard properly studded is 3

But I could be wrong ... a hint is to wear as much of the same levels of armour as possible as wearing 3 different armour values across your locations makes for confusion when trying to figure out if you are dead or not :)

They are distinguished due to the 'through' calls - bleeding from limbs goes straight off torso. I have fond memories of [livejournal.com profile] wulfboy sitting down as his first character as he bled to death while we stood round IC watching blood piss out of his limb.

Great RP

If I play, I'm being a gossipy midwife. I'm taking Folk Lore purely so that I can have a laugh wandering around telling people to put pennies in their shoes and stuff. Also taking herbalism and leech. I wish I had time to find decent leech phys-reps. I'm not taking any status (except outsider, coz I was thinking of playing in [livejournal.com profile] ajon's group) - playing peasants is cool ;-)

[identity profile] rich-bull.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
A real healer, you'll feel so loved.

[identity profile] renniek.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm officially a LRP girlfriend, I'm not allowed to play anything else :-b

[identity profile] wulfboy.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Come now. It works just as well if you play a cattle rustler and your boyfriend plays the five-point healing character.

Ah good, someone to bicker with about silly superstitions. Trust me to have picked a bit of the rules/background that isn't written yet as a character concept.

[identity profile] renniek.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
You always have to be awkward ;-)

Look forward to bickering. Superstitious peasants kick ass!

Stayage is no issue; if Ben and Katherine deside you smell, you're welcome to stay here. The only reason I mention Ben and Katherine is that their place is much nicer and not full of st- ahem. Smelly folk.
