Yes. Yes, it is. The iPhone 3G and iPod touch (2nd generation) are totally capable of supporting this feature. There's no reason why this perfectly simple data transaction would be beyond the sturdy little iPhone 3G and/or iPod touch (2nd generation). In fact, for about a week after iOS4 rolled out, my iPod Touch (2nd generation) was happily syncing^[1] notes without my telling it. Then with the next update it went away, because Apple had decided that this flavour was perhaps too EXTREME for a mere second-class citizen like myself.

This is not a question of hardware limitations or compatibility, Apple, and don't try to imply that it is by way of your ambiguous "not supported" phrase. It's only not supported because you've decided they should not support it. This is another clear example of you arbitrarily withholding a feature from your customers purely in order to get us to buy the newer model.

There goes any sense of brand loyalty I may have had. So, these HTC Desires, then...

[1] "Sync" is a word which is here used to mean "backup", as it only works in one direction - it makes a copy of your notes on your mail server. Handy for copy-and-pasting into another application on your PC, I guess.

That's always been the problem with me and apple... their stuff is always far too expensive, usually more expensive than I think they should be for what they do. Part of that is the designer thing, I suppose. So I have usually gone for the cheaper option...

Never had a problem with my HTC phone that a quick reboot couldn't sort out...

Not sure about IPad... I always get the impression that its basically an IPhone (it works off apps, same as an IPhone) without the useful phone ability and far too big to stick in a back pocket. Its almost like microtechnology in reverse - 'Hey, lets make it bigger and take away some of the functionality!'. If this trend continues I am fairly confident Apple will release a device which operates of vacuum tubes before the end of the century. Hopefully they'll do this in time for Victoriana so we can use one to do OOC admin at the event without it looking OOC.

You're right, it's an iPhone that's the size of your head. I think the technology is still getting smaller though - the iPad 2 is apparently 33% thinner. After all, it's not just the iPhone screen blown up to twice the size - it's more like four iPhone screens laid side by side, a greater area filled with pixels at the same resolution. I know which one I'd rather watch an episode of Lost on.

If this trend continues we'll have touchscreen interface devices the size of coffee tables, and then we will be living in James Bond.

I don't know, aside from the typeface (which IIRC is actually something fairly common like Helvetica Bold Condensed) and the natural inclination to put text in horizontal blocks, there's not a lot of direct influence. LCARS has left a massive mark on the field of user interfaces but it's hard to draw the line between "inspired by" and "built on the same principles because they're good principles"...
