So we're into February, and before too long we may have to look into locating a new place to rent. (I'm shelving the idea of buying a house for now, at least until I have a good few thousand pounds behind me for deposit, fees, furniture, walrus tax, and whatever else the Fates throw at me.) I'm pretty sure we'll have to move this Summer; last year the landlady only let us stay because we left it until a week before the end of the contract to ring her and ask about renewing, and she didn't want to throw us out on our ears (or something). Maybe she'd be happy to have us stay on if we gave her fair warning (so didn't book decorators in) - it would save her paying an estate agent, after all. On the other hand, she may want to get new tenants in so she can put the rent up or something. I don't know. I'm not mad keen on staying anyway - it's kind of out of the way, and the neighbours are evil.

That, of course, leaves the question of where to move to. My vote goes to Bolton, since I spend so much time driving back and forth from there already, and there's not a great deal in Manchester that can't be found there - and Manchester is within easy reach, and I am given to understand that the housing prices are much lower. [livejournal.com profile] bacony, on the other hand, may well be working in Manchester by Summertime, and while Manchester is accessible for an evening out it is less attractive for the daily commute. Given that she'll be making that commute more than I visit people in Bolton, that seems to be a fairly hefty factor.

Oh well. We have time yet before we have to really start looking, and we don't even know for sure where she'll find work ... I seem to recall there's a good lot of solicitors in Stockport, for example, and I'm not moving there. In the mean time, if anyone knows of any Legal Cashier jobs going in Bolton, give us a shout.

Why not near us?

Why not live near us? It's easy for Katy to get to either Manchester or Stockport, and it doesn't take any longer to get to Bolton from our place than it does from yours. And we have a big cinema just round the corner. And 24 hour tescos. And all night buses so it's always easy to get home when you're pissed. Join us, Andy... Join us...

I think there are reasonable places down the road from us towards Stockport. Bolton is a scum hole after all.

Yeah, some of the areas further in towards Stockport are nice, as is the area around Burnage Lane. Although house prices near us are insane, renting prices are reasonable - it's no more expensive than renting in Fallowfield or Withington.
Join us, Andy... Join us...

...and we will feed you tea and cakes
From: [identity profile] arwel.livejournal.com
Yes! After we kill you we will dress you up all nice and pretty and have spiffy tea parties. We can even have paper hats.

I could of course be getting the wrong end of the stick.

I was thinking good cop, bad cop, so when you tried to intimidate Andy into joining us, I thought I'd try to entice him...
We need a 3rd kind of cop, otherwise Jo doesn't have anything to do...
From: [identity profile] myki.livejournal.com
Sadly convention gives her "dangerous to know" cop... or "Ugly" cop..

Neither partcularly inticing.

There is of course the 'Angry Captain' archetype who'll bust us down to traffic duty, or worse still take our badges and guns from us if we ever pull one more stunt like that. Of course once Andy actually shows any sign of actually getting away with it(preferably with a suitcase full of drug money) he'll turn a blind eye and heartily congratulate us if we manage to stop him.
From: [identity profile] arwel.livejournal.com
I was waiting for that. I was refering to the Angry Captain archetype whom I associate with the masculine pronoun. Of course, Jo does actually wear the trousers in our relationship

So Jo, if we can have an

"LISTEN SLEEZEBAGS! IF I HEAR YOU WITHIN 20 MILES OF THIS CASE THEN IT'LL BE YOUR BADGES - NOT GET OUT MY MY OFFICE!!!!"

That would be lovely

Unless you're going at rush hour, the extra bit of the M60 is only about 5 mins of driving compared to going from your house.
Would probably add 10 or 15 mins to your commute compared to going from Bolton

What sort of rentage are you looking at paying?

£400pcm is getting on the steep side for a house in Bolton.
Ask Rich & Al how much they pay. They live in a mice area with good bus access to the train station.
Bolton is only 15-25 minutes away from Manchester on a train, which is only slightly longer a travel time than manchester from Levenshulme.

As long as Bacon was looking for a job in centrl manchester, her commute would be infinitely better than the current 2.5 hours she does.

Whilst i am obviously a little biased towards you getting a house in the Bolton vicinity, go where you like.

You are, of course, missing the frequency of Manc-Lev trains, that they are often cancelled, delayed or mis advertised, that because Levenshulme is a crappy small station they often ignore it and that i don't like people poking holes in my arguments, even if they did agree with me on the whole...

We pay 300pcm but that's really unusual. I think 400pcm would get you somewhere quite nice.

I always found getting into manchester in the morning 10 times easier from bolton because of freqency of trains, plus bolton trains run into the late hours so there convient for nights out,
What about bury way, its on the metro and has most things, plus there are tons of jobs.
Although stockport may decieve to think there are loads of sols that because most are visible off stockport road and a few like davies and co are shit companys to work for.Plus stockport towns a hole, i know i live near there, but then there are at least 4 on the chorley new road alone here so i imagine there are plenty of vacancys in bolton and the bury ish area.

live in bolton!

Rich commutes into manchester on a daily basis, I did previously. Assuming you're fairly central in town I'd expect it to take just over an hour going in and a bit less going back. It was quicker when we lived nearer Nook and Sam (almost exactly an hour), but the area's nicer where we are now.

Our house is £430pcm and our landlady has other houses in the area and is quite good at getting stuff fixed and happy to leave us alone as well.

If you want her phone no ring rich tonight on his mobile as the house phone's broken and he can pass it on to you.

MOVE TO BOLTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please.
It's not a shit hole.
We love you - move here!
As Nook and Al have both said, the commute from Bolton to Manchester is easy. I did it for well over a year; Paul did it for 3 years. The trains are every 15 mins (or more) during the peak hours and you can reach Bolton from any of the Manchester stations. Bolton station also goes to many other locations; far more than a small local station such as Levenshulme. Katy's current commute is not to Bolton itself but outside of Bolton. In any case, I'll lookout for Legal Cashier's jobs in Bolton (ok, I'll probably forget...).

Move to Bolton. Go on. Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!!!
