I just used algebra to determine the concordant increase in dimensions required to double the effective area of an image.

Of course, if I'd been thinking, I would have just multiplied each dimension by the square root of 2.

Duh.

Why would you want to double the area of an image? I can think of many reasons to mess with the linear dimensions for the purposes of layout, but I can't see why an (exact) doubling of area would be of any practical interest.

That said, yes, you should have engaged your brain before deploying algebra.

I'd have been tempted to increase the resolution or put them in as bmps rather than compressed versions so the images were the same physical size but used twice as much memory. Mind you, your interpretation is less likely to get you fired...
