I think I've only ever seen KT Tunstall do this before, and it's one of the reasons I like her music. Owen Pallett (aka "Final Fantasy") does a pretty decent job aside from a false start or two on the vocals.

I know this may brand me a heretic, but I rather prefer this version to the original (at least, all the versions I've stumbled across on the net). For all her quirky charm, Joanna Newsom's vocals just grate slightly too much for me to properly enjoy.

Her vocals are all a part of the charm.

Also, I am glad that you are taking an interest in the music I point you to.

The first person I saw do this was a guy called Howie Day who opened for Tori Amos about 3 years ago at the Hammersmith Apollo. There's several examples of his work on YouTube. He's very cool.

To comment on the actual music, I mostly agree with you — a few of Newsom's songs are good and listenable to me, but Pallett made this one his own. This one is absolutely unbelievable and makes me want to have his babies.

I've had a lot of fun with digital delay before, but a lot of that is un-listenable. Belching sounds, mostly.
