Baby's First Warehouse Party
Oct. 14th, 2006 04:42 amI went out last night - as has previously been mentioned - specifically to enjoy the dance mix stylings of 2ManyDJ's. This proved difficult.
I hadn't been really aware of the arrangement for the evening - I had heard the name of the event ("Radio Soulwax Warehouse Party") but it hadn't really sunk in, or I'd assumed it was a gimmicky name or something. It turned out to be an actual warehouse party, in an actual warehouse. We arrived at said warehouse at about half past 10 and proceeded to stand in a large, overcrowded room listening to music that only really sounds good when you're on something, with excessively bright lights flashing in our faces[1]. At half past one
markthebrewer and his lovely wife decided to depart, and I elected to share a cab home. After all, it was basically a huge club with a really steep entry fee and no chairs, and I didn't think much of the music either - not only was it not my cup of tea to begin with but the bass was so loud as to drown out the words and basically anything else that might have been passably musical. Not at all what I had been expecting of the lads from Soulwax.
What I didn't realise was that this was all just precursor to the main act; 2ManyDJs did not in fact take the stage until 2AM. I am given to understand they were Quite Good. I am sorry that I didn't stick it out, but I really wasn't in the best mood for music appreciation at that stage anyway, having spent three uncomfortable hours being assaulted by music I didn't like and couldn't hear. Maybe next time turning up at 2AM would be in order - or I could just buy the album or something.
So, yeah, as live music goes, bit of a waste of money.
[1] Yes, I know, that makes me sound really old. But seriously, this wasn't your run-of-the-mill disco lighting, it was like halogen spotlights flashing directly into your eyeballs. I spent minutes at a time with my eyes closed. I can only assume it's another drugs thing.
