Boo speed cameras

Oh!  I have been speeding again.  This brings me up to 9 points, which I believe is the very edge of my margin for error.  I will have to be EXTRA CAREFUL from now on.

Boo to the police, for having the foresight to place speed cameras on long, straight, wide roads where they know people are likely to be travelling over the arbitrarily low speed limit!

How many points in how many years? How long you've got until the first fine comes off your license (I think it's three years)?

I generally don't. It was just this one really long, really straight, really wide stretch of road, and I didn't realise what speed I was going because it's such a big, wide, flat road, and fuck you.

Speaking as a pedestrian, i am well against speeding. I live just off a long, wide road. People speed down it all the time.

Incidentally, my bus was late today because there was a very serious crash about ten feet away from the speed cameras. Outside the school.

I'm generally against speeding myself, and find it slightly hypocritical when people complain about speed cameras catching them^[1], which is sort of like a murderer blaming his fingerprints. They (we) are, fundamentally, breaking the law. (Note my own moan above is largely ironic and sulky.)

Of course, crashes next to speed cameras only serve to demonstrate that people are willing to brake dangerously sharply to avoid getting caught by the cameras...

1)Buy a snooper 1, a very simple speed camera detector that beeps like crazy when you approach a live camera. It's not as hideously expensive as those GPS things and it's fairly reliable. Of course, if you do go far too fast then it beeps to tell you that there was a speed camera, back there......

2)Buy the AA Roadmap with all the speedcamera's noted on it and review before going on any new journeys.

3)Slow down. With 9 points in one year you sound like you ahve some pretty bad observational skills hun'. Maybe you just ain't designed to drive fast!

Problem is it doesnt detect the modern GATSOs or speed traps.
The laser based GATSO's are basically impossible to detect, despite the claims of some of the manafacturers of those detection toys, the inductive loop or Piezo electric ones (The ones which rely on long thin strips buried in the road) are likewise impossible to detect.

Even modern radar ones are very difficult as they are only active when a car passes, so by the time you realise there is a speed trap, its too late.

I dont think there are too many of them around Manchester though.

There was a plan for a totally integrated scheme which would use digital cameras with a link back to swansea. The ticket would be in the post before you event got out of the car. (It would also check MOT and tax status as well)

However that was canned due to possible legal issues, that the MOT data is usually about 6 weeks out of date, and the fact that the governments record on complex IT projects is not exactly sparkling.

However, they must have got passed their legal problems because the green paper is up for review again. (We got our copy about a week ago) but only for use around the london area.

That's the annoying thing, I generally don't drive fast. The three places I've been caught were ... let's see ...

1) Driving back from a Maelstrom, with several passengers, speed camera facing the oncoming traffic about two meters into a 30 zone.
2) On the way back from driving somebody home, late at night on a very wide, very straight, very empty road. Genuinely thought it was a 40 zone.
3) Popping into Macclesfield for lunch. Another long, straight road which half a mile away is unrestricted, though this time I didn't realise what speed I was going. New Car is really hard to stick to the limit in, it doesn't take a lot of pressure on the accelerator for it to creep up.

TBH losing the license wouldn't be so bad. At least I wouldn't have to pay insurance, tax, repairs, buy new cars ... getting to work would be a pain but meh.
