who is your favourite Doctor?

Probably McCoy, though that may be because he had the benefit of a decade or so of character development in the novels (so perhaps it would be fairer to say the Seventh Doctor). I like the Tom Baker era, but I grew up with Davison ... and of course Ecclestone was very good, and Tennant promises much.

It's hard to pick a favourite, they're all so different. But I think I'll go with McCoy (with an option to revise upwards when Tennant has his first full series).

- Geoff Johns, because we could totally geek out and he could maybe put in a good word for me as an artist

What is your view on drugs?

I think people have the right to fuck with their own body chemistry if they so choose. I choose not to, and I don't consider it in general to be very wise, but I appreciate that some people have done their homework and known exactly what complications can arise from what substances and know, to some degree, what they are doing. I still don't consider it a particularly big or clever thing to do, but that's just my opinion.

Maybe they should legalise drugs, but have some kind of exam or test that you have to take before you're allowed to buy them...

Who is your favorite artist?

I am big on JH Williams III, because he knows a lot about composition and framing. A comic book page isn't simply a string of panels with him, it's a piece of art in and of itself. Plus he can do a lot of different styles.

I'm very fond of Tom Grummett, because he has a very clear style that encapsulates, in my mind, the best things about traditional superhero art. It helps that he drew a number of my favourite books for some time.

I do like Doug Mahnke, because there's so much detail in his work. Even the cartoon-character visuals of The Mask look solid and convincing.

Favourite, though? Somebody I like enough to make me consider buying something on the strength of the art alone? Err. In the past I may have said Dan Jurgens or Chuck Wojtkiewicz, or Mike Weiringo, but I'm basically fickle.

Alex Ross is always a good draw, though, because painted superheroes remain a novelty.

So, yeah, in summary .... beats me.

Special School is Tuesday and Friday.

I never learned to draw; I started doodling when I was about 9 (because my cousin drew cartoons and I wanted to be him) and never stopped.

What single person (who you have at least met) has had the biggest influence of your life?

I'm assuming immediate family is excluded? Because, you know, obviously my Mum.

Beyond that, er ... I'm not sure. There's a bunch of teachers - many of whose names I've forgotten, such as the Drama teacher who taught us to be individuals and the RE teacher who taught us to think - and a fair smattering of the people in Warped/LARS (the Manchester University sci-fi/larp societies respectively), who were just such an immediately accepting and welcoming bunch. (We're an odd breed, really, aren't we? We deride anyone and everything outside the clique, but allow almost anyone into the clique with relatively little fuss.)

But the single, biggest influence? I would be hard pressed to say. So I shan't.
