Why leave out Superman3? Ok, Superman4 was bad, but 3 was good.

I think mostly politics, though there could be a stylistic statement going on. There was a controversial change in director after 2 - actually part way through 2 - because the studio wanted a "campy" feel reminiscent of the Batman TV series. Many hardcore fans disapprove of the direction the franchise took after the directorial handover.
