The scene, as it played in my mind:

SUE: You were at 4000 Kelvin! That's as hot as a supernova!
REED: Well, ah, that's actually not -
SUE: It's as hot as the surface of the sun!
REED: You know, technically it's -
SUE: You could ignite the atmosphere!
REED: Well I mean there are theories, but -
JOHNNY: So ... supernova ... bad?
REED: ... Okay, "bad." "Bad" will do.

In retrospect, this manner of immediate internal rewrite may be part of the reason I found the first part of the movie to be acceptable.

One of my favorite "science stories" is that the scientists involved in the Manhattan Project had a betting spread as to whether the Trinity test would ignite the atmosphere.
