Constantine

It is a good movie. Better, as is by now fashionable to say, than one would expect.
Reeves himself remains unimpressive, but there were certain shots in certain scenes where he actually managed to look scruffy and even - shock - harangued. He sort of works here because (from my own limited experience with the character) Constantine is supposed to be stolid, implacable and somewhat stone-faced, which is a part that Mr Keanu can certainly play.
What really sold the movie to me is use of the Spear of Destiny, which as well as being a genuine legendary artefact is also an item of cosmic power in the DC Universe of which Constantine, being a Vertigo character, is nominally a part. Like seeing Curt Connors in the Spiderman movie, this gave me one of those big, stupid grins. Oh, and there was a smashing sequence in the middle which looked very much like a Dave McKean cover. Smashing.
