I am not advocating the use of Macs in any way, shape or form, but check this out.  It so tiny!

Reliability, however, is apparently not included.  "The modular design of Mac mini lets you upgrade your current system to the elegance, simplicity and reliability of Macintosh."  Hee hee hee.

Its probably so you cant use your untrained middle finger when something goes wrong :-)

Actually i do want a PowerPC based computer at some stage, although its probably going to be the AmigaOne rather than a Mac because it takes standard PC components, and it will only end up running Linux anyway. Also I am very Nostalgic for my old Amiga, Its was my first Multi-tasking environment :-)

The only problem is that bacause Apple monopolise the supply of fast processors, they currently only go up to 1Ghz.
They are also slightly more expensive because they are very Niche.

Still there are lots of rumors that IBM are pushing PowerPC for the Chinese market (Which is the last great area of the world with very little PC coverage) If they do that, we could see some reasonably priced PowerPC based consumer boxes. (This would also give the Chinese government some kind of control over software as well, because most Western games and software are designed for x86 and wouldnt run)

Out of interest, what kind of unreliability are we talking about? it software? or hardware. I have been reading some articles about the old Mac, and it seems they were vastly over-engineered from a hardware side. I know the new ones have very little in common though.

Mark W: I thought that OS X solves this by being based on Unix?

Software reliability has gone up these days with Mac OS X. I'm almost tempted but like [livejournal.com profile] spondula I think I would probably go for a generic PowerPC based system as they cost less.

Besides my nice AMD64 system looks shiney enough and runs quite fast enough for the time being...

Both software and hardware, although you're right in that the older Macs did suffer more from miscellaneous and erratic hardware failures than the newer ones we had. We also had major issues with networking that the Mac techs never seemed to be able to sort out (although maybe they were just inept, I know that the PC techs we use are).
