That Ends Well

bacony was returned, alive and unharmed. She brought with her the other Katie, as well as Chad and batelf. Katy confirmed that the previous night's entertainment had, indeed, been marred by everybody's constant complaints regarding my absence, as wulfboy says. That made me feel warm inside, because it is a natural human reaction to feel better when others suffer for you. Like Eastenders, or Jesus. Still, I want to know what people were saying about me and samharber while we were small and far away...

We watched The TwinTwo Towers, because Katy had "only seen it once". I had no great desire to see it again. That's not to say I found it particularly objectionable, I was quite happy to sit through it again, just that I would not have gone out of my way to do so. I may not even buy the inevitable trilogy box-set when it eventually materialises. As trilogies go, I am frankly more interested in Back To The Future or Indiana Jones. LotR is all very well, but I find it highly unlikely that I will ever be far from somebody who owns a copy, should I be struck by some sudden, irrational desire to experience tha majesty once more.

The viewing experience was enhanced by everybody giggling every time anybody did or said anything even remotely gay. So pretty much all the time, then. Also, Katy randomly commented that Aragorn was "dreamy". Chad got all defensive, since her speech bubble had little hearts around it and he's the only one who's allowed to be dreamy, dammit. Tried to mediate by noting that, dreamy though Aragorn may be, he loses points for being small and far away. Hilarity ensued.


After 2xTowers we watched the first anime video from the big big bag that Chad decided I needed. Apparently he has no room to store them himself, and I am some form of convenient dumping ground. I shall likely watch them all and then pass them on to the next person I find that absolutely needs to watch apparently the entire Guyver saga or whatever. Or possibly Oxfam.


Then we went and watched the League of Extraordinarily Gentlemen, which I thought was immense fun. I didn't see any of the "horrible confusing cuts" that everybody complained about and I am driven to the conclusion that they were trying to find fault with the film because it bears almost no relation to the original comics. Certainly very little of the film was Alan Moore, but aside from that I thought it was a decent summer blockbuster type action movie. And it makes fantastic source material for a session of Adventure!.

I suspect everyone is only three people separated from a Guyver anime video. We have about three scattered around the house, a random grab-bag of episodes. It spawned the "magic shout" that raises people from the dead ("Chooooooooooooo!") and the endlessly amusing "Shit! You too have high frequency blades". And the joy of the long, non-stop dialogue from bizarre Freudian monstrosities about "my energy weapons, which are powered by potatos, cause the arms to become limp and make glue come out of your nose." Anime videos drift aimlessly through the sea of media. Perhaps they are looking for something.

I must confess horribly that I have nothing against L-x-G. I hope this will change when Mark Wilkin visits and brings some copies of the graphic novels up, assuming ed_fortune reminds him.

After watching the movie last night, I read the graphic novel (the 6-issue miniseries, really - though many classic novels were originally published in serial form so I can't hold that against it). It is extremely different in both tone and plot, as I had been told. Most of the characters were markedly different and bore only cursory relationships to their counterparts in the book. I can see justifiable reasons for a lot of the changes ("Opium fiends? In a family movie?") and terrible reasons for others ("We can't have a woman in charge now can we, smelly little lesbian^[1]" Though the thought occurs that the reason for that one may have been "Sean Connery is getting the largest paycheque").

In fact, most of the changes could probably be attributed to "We bought a comic book, not an intellectural historical commentary! Where are the explosions? Where is the sex? Where are the tights?"

That said, the movie is fairly good at doing what it does - a rollicking action blockbuster inspired by a very good book. As long as you go in determined to misread every "based on" as "inspired by" a good time is had by all. And Nemo was cool. He threw his scimitar at a man's neck and caught it on the rebound.

[1] "Smelly little lesbian" is a line from the graphic novel. It is spoken by the villain. Its use hee is intended to imply something about the sensibilities of Hollywood executives.

I always though that Alan Moore was still waiting to do the next storyline in the next year or two...?

League has just finished it's second book, which is heavily HG Well's insprired. It's taken about 2 and a half years for all six books to come out, or at least that's how it feels.

Not read Promehean. Anything Planetary or Transmetropolitan (haven't read any in a long while), definitely anything good from Morrison or the usual crowd (good, I said). Your good reception is assured. Smiley.

I really like the story bits of Promethea. Sometimes it gets a bit overwhelmed by the Occultism 101 parts though.

I agree. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is fun and Aragorn is "dreamy" (although I'd use the phrase "sexy" as I'm not trapped in Escaflowne...).
