It's possible to enjoy the medium without being drawn into the filthy monthly crack-habit ... I would recommend graphic novels such as Watchmen or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I think you'd enjoy that one. Sandman is good but a bit gothy at points, definitely worth a look though.
