Bizarrely, it probably took more effort to remove than to allow. They will have had to change the flow of conversation depending on the "gender" flag.
I suppose it's not so terrible, given that much of the relationship depends on prompts from them and their sexuality could be considered "set". It's amusing when you're captured and they torture your "loved one" because they suppose you'll be less resistant to that. (Good players refuse to answer because it's the galaxy at stake, no matter how much you care about them dammit! Evil players refuse to answer because it's fun to watch the goody-goody love interest suffer ha ha ha. Or something.)
