Thankfully things are a lot better now, often with driver support before the hardware is out there (USB 3.0 is a good example). Even the stalwarts of wifi chipsets have recently seen the light. The big hold out is graphics chips - specifically nVidia although you can of course load a few Mb of their secret binary into your kernel and it will probably work.
