ok, now, see

i know it's better to support the local geek shops
and i know it's in everyone's interest to pump money back into the economy

but the Star Wars RPG Ships of the Galaxy sourcebook is like £22 in FanBoy3
and only £13 on amazon.co.uk.

i don't think i can fight that

I think you've made the right call. Actually that's the only call you could realistically make.

The only way Local Geek shops can make it is by providing actual services that online stores can't.

"Because you'll feel bad if we're gone" is not a good reason to have game books cost $15 more.

Fan boy 3 has a tendency to overprice on stuff. But it also tends to have a lot of stuff that Travelling Man and/or Forbidden Planet don't. But it also smells - REALLY BADLY.

In the case of a book, I'd buy from Amazon - for something like a board game I'd still shop 'local'.
