If you're referring to the house on the main road in Denton (which I think is just up the road from you now), that have had them up for a month, they have a good reason.

I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, but there have been one or two in the area.

Their daughter's birthday was at the start of November, and she was very sick from a young age. She loved Christmas, though, and so as a treat for her, they'd decorate the house on her birthday.

When she eventually passed away, her parents resolved to continue the tradition in her memory.

Phil and Pauline on my team are aware of the family, and it came up when we were talking about decorations last week.

Fair enough, that is a very good reason for looking like idiots.

No, I'm not saying they are idiots, but to people passing by who know nothing of their heartwarming tale they still look like idiots. And if you're going to look like an idiot it may as well be in somebody's memory.

And that doesn't explain the many bright displays of fairylights that went up all over the area weeks ago.

(Or maybe it does? Maybe it encourages them - or knowing nothing of the tale, they think the family in question is trying to get one up on them, and rush to compete.)

Quite possibly. The two families who used to live opposite Ewan and Karen in Bradford were in such drastic and idiotic competition with each other that the entire houses (roofs included) were covered in gaudy lights, earlier and earlier.

The year that E&K left there was a giant tree in the back garden of one of them, covered in lights that lit up the sky.
