Quick quick update!

We now have a flat of our own and almost all our stuff out of Vince & Katy's house. The PC will likely be the next to go hence the quick quick update. We has no internets at the new place! Rather than a cable/satellite package we're thinking of Freeview and ADSL. Who can tell me about ADSL? I gather you need a pre-existing phone line...

Will follow this up with a protected entry with address details, but don't post anything yet because we don't have a key for the mailbox. (There are one or two kinks to work out with the letting agency...)

You will need an active phone line (this will likely mean paying 10 quid a month line rental to someone) for ADSL.

ThinkBroadband (used to be ADSLGuide) has several good guides and FAQs and lets you compare different providers:

We have Virgin cable at the moment so I can't really give any recommendations, although I think PlusNet are okay and Eclipse always used to be.

www.samknows.com will tell you what's available at your exchange. If you want a 20 meg connection you'll need to go with BE or an Entanet reseller like Aquiss.

If you're happy with 8 meg, then get a BT line and you can use any ADSL supplier or the LLUs. Plusnet has a good rep I've seen.

Zen is very good, offering a monthly renewal, but a) is expensive and b) requires a BT line.

We're on Tesco.net and apart from being tied in to a 12 month contract have been trouble free. Obviously this means that we've no idea what the helpline is like.

I used to be on tesco.net - and they were indeed very good - the one time I needed them the helpline was good and fast as well.

I'm now on 8meg virgin, over a BT line - pretty stable (although peer-to-peer, including BBC iplayer is throttled at prime time). Came with a free wireless router as well. This is due to them being both cheaper and offering a faster connection.
