"We do like the design," said the client, which was probably for the best, since the site was due to go live and they'd been using it in development for three months and had somehow managed not to see the design, apparently, until this point.
"However," they continued, "we find that we are required to request a trivial change in order to maintain our sense of involvement.
"We would like to change this orange for one three shades lighter, making the text harder to see.
"And we would like this change to take place on every image throughout the site.
"By tomorrow."

Poorly; linked doc actually says "you will not get any anti-aliasing of the edges of the colored areas. This can have a detremental effect to the look off any non-cartoon like images."

And goes on to give my favourite phrase of the day: "This type of color replacement is not designed with practical real world images in mind".

So there's an entire colour replacement function that is just there for kicks. Woohoo!

Read the rest of the color (sic) manual pages and you'll see there a number of ways to skin that cat. You could apply a Gamma correction or modify the histogram (which I assume is what you did with photoshop).

Also cycgwin is our friend.

Ahh well, your original post seemed to intimate that you had a lot of images to process. And of course learn to do it once, save hours of time next time someone wants to do such a thing. I'm sure there is a parable about men and fishes in there somewhere ;-)
