"We do like the design," said the client, which was probably for the best, since the site was due to go live and they'd been using it in development for three months and had somehow managed not to see the design, apparently, until this point.
"However," they continued, "we find that we are required to request a trivial change in order to maintain our sense of involvement.
"We would like to change this orange for one three shades lighter, making the text harder to see.
"And we would like this change to take place on every image throughout the site.
"By tomorrow."

You seem to have made a number of common teccie mistakes:

1: making the site usable.
2: Giving someone your correct phone number
3: Believing specifications
4: Not ignoring them.

Ooh yes, I agree with manamar. Throw spurious legal stuff into the equation as well. that always confuses them!

If all the sensible answers are not working, might I suggest breaking into their offices tonight and increasing the brightness on their monitors.

They're never know the difference.

Lie to them and just tell them you did it, they won't notice three shades.
