You know he's only written one episode for the series, and he's not really in charge of anything. I think he gets a "created by" credit and might be among the many producers, but I think he's mostly hands-off.
From a certain point of view, everything since episode 1 has been fanfic[1] ... hence the cheesy use of pterodactyl.
[1] In the same way that every Pern novel since Dragonflight is basically fanfic, right down to the embarassing self-insertion Mary Sue character.
