This is probably no help, but you could probably have got, and fitted, an alternator yourself with one spanner, one alternator from a scrappies (for about £30) and half an hour.

It is a Honda Accord. The Alternator on the Honda Accord is deep down inside the engine, between frightening bits of technology. I choose to believe it would have been more trouble than it was worth. And anyway, at least I'm actually using my holidays now, which I have been rather lax in doing.
