"Ultimate Marvel" continuity is distinct from the normal Marvel universe. I think it started with "Ultimate Spider-Man" - somebody wanted to do a comic that didn't depend on any of the other comics, largely inspired (I think) by the movie, and then a couple of people did other titles along the same lines, and slowly it all tied together into a distinct universe. Essentially, the idea is to do the same characters, but MORE COOL. It's a bit edgier, actions have consequences, and things are generally well-thought-out.
So, in summary, Nick Fury's always been black in Ultimate Avengers.

I got hold of the Ultimate Avengers movie the other day and it's quite enjoyable but...when did Nick Fury change colour?
