Weekend

So, I posted a couple of random stuffs over the weekend but nothing concrete ... here's a proper diary-type entry.

Friday: In the evening was the work Christmas Party, in Skipton. This was not nearly so riotous as I have previously been led to believe, because we were in a hotel and sharing with a few other parties. A certain amount of restraint was thus imposed, and the only thing that got destroyed was a small glass candleholder that exploded due to fire. (Hey kids! Don't throw cups of water on a fire! Chances are it'll be dispersed into droplets by the time it gets there, which means the heat will separate it into hydrogen and oxygen! Wowee!) Spent the night at Mum's house in Ilkley because Mum was willing to give me a lift home, which meant I could drink alkyhol.

Saturday was spent mostly driving home to Manchester, buying food (mostly for Sunday, though we also got something for dinner - and ate it as we watched Masters of the Universe) and then going to see Return of the King for [livejournal.com profile] icklejo's birthday. It was highly enjoyable and spoiled only by my sticky pants. See, in honour of the Return of the King, see, they're selling king-sized soft drinks, one of which I bought. Unfortunately these cups are slightly too big for the cup-holders in the armrest. I gamely tried to balance it on top while I removed my coat, but unfortunately it fell off.

The annoying thing is, those cups are really quite watertight when they've got their lids on (those ubiquitous McDonald's style paper cups with plastic lids). I hadn't even put a straw in. If I hadn't grasped the cup in just the wrong way, the lid wouldn't have fallen off and I would have been fine... oh well. The nice lady gave me a new cup and a roll of tissue to dry myself with, and gave me a spare seat only a row or two behind my original seat (she was confident that it was free, I think there's some that they never sell in case of just such an eventuality), and the movie was good so I didn't mind so much.

Sunday involved getting up and sitting on my ass while [livejournal.com profile] bacony made Christmas Dinner for myself and [livejournal.com profile] batelf. (Well, not quite, I did do the washing up and I offered to help with the cooking, but apparently it was a "shove it in the oven and leave until cooked" kind of meal and was mostly done by the time the washing was completed. And I cooked the night before, so.) Then we opened presents! Yay!

[livejournal.com profile] bacony bought me the last box of Farscape season 3, so now I only have to wait until the single-box S4 comes out and I'll be sorted for Farscape. She also got me a little Japanese transformer toy and, um, I think there was something else but I've forgotten, and it is far away and in Manchester. Sorry.

[livejournal.com profile] batelf bought me a movie called Red Sun Rising starring the lovely Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, a name we already know from budget SF flicks "CyberTracker" ('A painful cinematic experience') and, er, "CyberTracker 2" ('Another unnecessary Don 'The Dragon' Wilson escapade'). Apparently he's had something like a 15-year movie career thus far, appearing in gems such as Batman Forever and eight films called "Bloodfist". I am eagerly anticipating watching Red Sun Rising, especially since it also features another favourite washed-up SF star - Terry "Jadzia Dax" Farrell. The movie came with a Little Book of Mark Twain's wit and wisdom, which I suspect was added by Chris rather than given away with the movie.

I also opened presents from [livejournal.com profile] pkgem and [livejournal.com profile] samharber. Gem gave me Starscream, who kicks ass, despite not being one of the more firmly-adhered Transformers. Several of his parts are designed to swivel and, rather than being hinged, are just pushed into a hole, so they have a tendency to come out. (I suppose the reasoning may have been that the damn things are only going to be broken off anyway, so we may as well not attach them.) And there's nowhere to put his big meaty fists when he's a plane. All that notwithstanding, though, it's a marvellous piece of nostalgia - I never owned Starscream, but everybody knew someone who did. Oh, she also gave me a Strongbadia key ring which I'm sure cost her a lot. It's very cool and may supplant my existing Quantum Leap keyring, I'm not sure yet.

Sam, meanwhile, gave me a Venom action figure complete with slime. It's cool, though I doubt I'll be pouring the slime on it. Aside from anything else, it would be a blatant continuity violation - Venom can't slime himself!

After opening the meal and eating the presents, we enjoyed my gift to [livejournal.com profile] bacony, which was Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta (AKA "Castle In The Sky"). From the maker of "Spirited Away", it's a thoroughly engrossing movie that grabs you right from the start. I think I may have to show it to our Adventure! team, since though it is set around the 1890's rather than the 1920's, it does involve airships, ancient civilisations and a gun the size of your arm.

Hmm. I spotted Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille but failed to recognise Mark Hamill or Mike McShane...

Anyway, that was the end of the weekend. It seemed inordinately short, what with the Friday/Saturday morning in Ilkley ... but it's not really over yet, there's D&D tonight! Huzzah! And this week is only two days long. So it's not so bad.

As most LRPers do at one time or another, I have had an idea for a game. I don't think it's anything I could ever develop into a fully-functioning thing - it's really a framework for a monthly club-style thing, and I can't just pull one of those out of my ass - but it'll be fun to think it through. Can't say much about it now since I've spent far too long already on this entry, but it has strong Exalted influences. I'll try and expand on it tomorrow or something.
