Garfield, from Jon's POV.

Remember, Garfield is not a psionic broadcaster, nor is Jon telepathic. This is what that man sees and hears all the time. That's just sad.

That's depressing, really. I talk to my cats all the time.

Why did Lees name spring to mind?

Technically, from the POV of someone with the same lack of thought-bubble- reading abilities as Jon but still in a Garfield-centric location. Many times he's not looking at Garfield when he pulls a face, for instance.

But yeah, read that on [livejournal.com profile] websnark last night. It does highlight the loneliness of Mr Arbuckle and bring us closer to his plight.

I agree with the posters who can't actually imagine what Garfield could say to make the strips any funnier, and can see that the "Garfield is funnier without Garfield's thoughts" theory has merit.

And the Fred Basset ones further down the thread are also improved.
It's enough to make one start a Campaign Against Explicit Pet Thought.

Of course, if I recall correctly, the only pet in Special School is dead.

erm yes in the very first strip.... a pet dawg which had died....

Well, we don't know about the Special School cast. Manny might keep Gerbils or something.

Jon without Garfield's thoughts make it a little bit too weeping Gorilla (from Promethea) for me, but I'm not a Garfield fan, at all.

Thinking about it, and reading the websnark article, I suspect that the reason I didn't like Garfield as a kid is because I undertsood that the cat wasn't talking to the owner.

(I was always fascinated by speech bubble as a kid. My initial short fiction was basically stick men and speech bubbles.)
