Gay Cowboy Movie Update

Every report on the Oscar nominations on Radio 1[1] last night mentioned "Gay Cowboy Movie Brokeback Mountain". Munich was just "Munich", Crash was just "Crash" and Syriana was just "Syriana" (though they did once mention that George Clooney played a spy in it, so I assume it is about spies).

BBC mainstream news, however, has tactfully upgraded it to "Cowboy Romance Brokeback Mountain".

Which actually sounds like a manga, but that's by the way.

Hmm... I'm supposed to be going to see it tonight.
I'm somewhat put off by the fact that it's a gay romance with a strong cowboy subtext. I'm not too sure about the cowboy part.

I love Firefly partly because of the cowboy trappings. They, like me, are cool.

I was trying to think of other movies along the same ilk and the only one I could think of was Desert Hearts...

Gay Cowboy movie, aren't they all?

Pretty much my thinking. It was always introduced to me as 'that Lesbian movie', as opposed to what it is, a very sweet love story.

That said, I'm pretty sure other films in the past have had add on names 'British Made Chariots of Fire', spring to mind. Maybe it's merely because the words 'gay' and the word 'cowboy' sit comfortably in peoples minds.

Gay Hobbit Movie, Fellowship of the Ring....

I'm probably being optimistic, but I'm pretty sure that if was about Chinese Cowboys, it'd be 'Chinese Cowboy Movie'.

And Schindlers List is not a bad example. There was no way you coulnd't know what it was about, as everytime it was mentioned, someone explained the premise.

Is that the Desert Hearts of Channel 4 Red Triangle fame?

Yes. Which is funny becuae if memory serves, there's only one actual sex scene, and it's quite sedate. There's some kissing as well, but feh.
