Apropos of Comics
A quick poll of the comics I've bought over the last three months:
JLA Classified (writer: Warren Ellis)
Legion of Superheroes (writer: Mark Waid)
JLA (writer: Geoff Johns)
JSA (writer: Geoff Johns)
JSA Classified (writer: Geoff Johns)
Teen Titans (writer: Geoff Johns - though the most recent has guest writer Gail Simone)
Green Lantern (writer: That Man Again)
Green Lantern Corps: Recharge (writer: Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons)
I should stress that I'm reading almost none of those specifically because of the author. Been reading them for years. There's a chance I might have dropped Green Lantern when they brought back Hal Jordan if it hadn't been Johns writing it, but I can't say for sure. (On a similar note, I am really only sticking with LSH because Waid's writing it. I disapproved thoroughly of rebooting Legion continuity yet again, but I decided to give the man a chance and I can certainly respect what he's doing with the mythos. It's a good story. That doesn't make it sit any easier that my Legion was cast aside like so much detritus - but that's enough of that, I'm talking about Geoff Johns today. Again.)
I guess I just have very similar tastes to Geoff Johns. Naturally, that's assuming he only takes titles he is personally fond of (as I read to be the case with GL). It's possible that he's just a whore who can't say no to an extra writing assignment, but I'm pretty happy that his work's not suffering from the extra load. Of course that could simply be because, as mentioned, our tastes seem to coincide. The man writes exactly what I want to read, dammit.
I'm not going to do a full review right now as I've kind of let that slide lately, but I will just note that Johns' JLA arc is covering more or less the same ground as the Identity Crisis miniseries (both thematically and literally - it's fallout from things that were revealed in that series but not properly developed) but doing it much more satisfyingly. Plus with a surprise guest-villain. I am left to wonder if there'll be any mention of L-Ron and the Task Force...
