Man from the recovery service said it was probably a leak in the brake fluids, and I should ring the "dealer" and ask about the warranty.  What with being only a month after its MOT and all.  Apparently there is a "you should have noticed this" period.

The "dealer" was singularly unhelpful.  He was very much of the opinion that all sales were final, that if there is a problem I should check the warranty (which the recovery  man said would more accurately be called an "after-sales care policy") and contact the insuring company if it's covered.

Recovery Man said that, despite brakes being something that should be checked on an MOT, the MOT checkers aren't actually allowed to remove parts from the car to check things - so if things are covered (as my brake line is) it may not get checked.  Which, as he mentioned, is farcical.  Had I the MOT certificate with me (it remains at bacony's house) he would have had me ring the MOT issuer and try to badger them into sorting it under threat of calling the Ministry (which, apparently, most MOT garages fear), but as it is (since I want it fixed sooner rather than later) I elected to take it to a garage to be looked at.

So car is at garage awaiting to be looked at - they were booked up today but said they might be able to squeeze me in (and if not - tomorrow).  The fingers, they are crossed.

If its less than 30 days since you bought the car then I think they have to sort it out pretty much by law.

That's basically what I said - "You've sold faulty merchandise, it's your problem, what are you going to do about it" - but he was not moving.

I'm not certain what I can do about it. Should I inform the police or something? Depending on what the garage says I may well be getting in touch with the Ministry regarding whoever issued the MOT ... but that's sort of a separate issue.

Bad luck, Andy. You too can join the sh@t month club (even if it's October).

I would definitely contact garage about talking to the ministry about the MOT. They may take a better look at it and tell you what else may be wrong with it. Failing that, squeel on them!

The office of fair trading (http://www.oft.gov.uk/default.htm) are probably more appropriate than the police. They've got a website about consumer advice that should let you find out what your exact rights are. They may not be able to help you get a refund or free repairs, but if they get substantiated complaints about this guy they can probably shut him down. Vengeance is sweet. You could always say you're going to call them and see if that makes him more reasonable about it.

Of course, the last time I threatened a garage with the Vehicle Inspectorate, they torched the car in front of my house.

I did remember that, but cunningly, the only address they have is my Mum's house. At which they will not find a green Honda Accord!
