Inordinately geeky moment: today a review of the latest Doctor Who novel ("Island of Death", featuring the Third Doctor and UNIT) popped up in my RSS feed. Upon reading said review, and picking up on the affectionately satirical undertones hinted at ("'Jinkies!' you'll exclaim as everyone boards a boat to rescue him, and the Brigadier drinks solidly."), it occurred to me that the title would have worked nicely with "And The" at the beginning. In the old days, you see, when a TV story was adapted to novel form it would usually be renamed in the form "Doctor Who And The...". In extreme cases, the title would be changed completely ("Terror of the Zygons" => "Doctor Who and the Loch Ness Monster").
This, of course, despite "Who" not actually being the Doctor's name.
My brain being what it is, I then started thinking about what episodes of the most recent series fit nicely into that format.
DOCTOR WHO AND ROSE - sort of acceptable. Sounds like a pre-school book.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE END OF THE WORLD - nice.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE UNQUIET DEAD - oh, definitely.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE ALIENS OF LONDON - hmm, not really.
DOCTOR WHO AND WORLD WAR THREE - I'll give you that one.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE DALEK - cracking, sits nicely with ..AND THE DALEKS.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE LONG GAME - ok.
DOCTOR WHO AND FATHER'S DAY - no, no, no.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE EMPTY CHILD - yes indeedy.
THE DOCTOR DANCES - I can't think of any appropriate way to rewrite that. Of course it would probably be novelised with the Empty Child, so not too much of an issue. Could use "The Doctor Dances" as a chapter title.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE BOOM TOWN - couldn't decide whether to use "The" or not. A tricky one, and I don't think it really works.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE BAD WOLF - might work better with "BIG" in the title.
DOCTOR WHO AND THE PARTING OF THE WAYS - fantastic. Another two parter, I'd probably use that as the title of the book over Bad Wolf.
So, er .....
... bored at work, then.
