So I'm reading through Boy Meets Boy.  I'm not sure why.  It's kind of like watching a train wreck - it's too horrible, and yet I stare, perversely fascinated.

Horrible's perhaps too strong a word[1]; it's mostly bland, uninspired and vaguely insulting.  I didn't think that it was possible to create a comic entirely out of fan-service; the central premise seems to be "There's these two hot guys and they're a couple and in love and omg it's so kawaiii ~~~!"  And that's not just the set-up, it's also most of the jokes.  There are rare moments when the characters do, say or think about something other than boylove or sex, but even then they rarely stray far from a few topics guaranteed to connect with the audience, like clothes or Buffy[2].  The characters are little more than a collection of paper-thin caricatures designed to satisfy the author's man-on-man fantasies, and the whole thing is not really dealt with in a sensitive or endearing way.  Production values are low and there are too many jokes about the fonts used for dialogue.

That said, the odd occasion when the author ventures beyond the comic's usual boundaries does raise the bar a little, such as this strip, which is one of the first (in about a year's worth of comics) where the punchline actually made me smile.

EDIT: Okay, I kind of like this one too. Hoohah!

[1] But then it wouldn't be an Earthworm Jim quote.
[2] And even then the conversation revolves around how sexy teh boys in Buffy are.
