I am thinking of doing most things CSS-wise, having only the main title as an image.  Oh, and the main text box will extend down when there is content, while the side bar will not, meaning there'll be a column of that blue stuff down the left.  Am trying to avoid tables for layout, though they may be the best solution for the image thumbnail index...

Incidentally, anyone interested in the typeface might be interested to know it's BADABOOM courtesy Blambot.

Absolutely do everything with CSS, I have regular 'discussions' with our designers who want to use images for everything.

Yeah ... of course here it's not just a matter of getting nice antialiasing or a specific font, I'm also toying with the idea of doing something fancy with art and images (like on the current site).

Nowt wrong with a few images here and there, it's an 'art' site not a public information site and so has lattitude to be k3wl :).
Hmmm well I didn't know that IE supported PNG images that's interesting, btw I vaguely remember that PNG supports transparency so you could cut down on the image size a tad.

PNG is basically the open source version of GIF, so yeah. I think IE has supported it since about v4 ... could be wrong though.

TBH I thought about floating the image over a CSSed box, but I thought that would be too fiddly with the drop shadow. And anyway, 6K is hardly Godzilla scale. :)

Not quite a version of GIF, its better ;-) Although the drive from GIF to PNG was caused by Unisys enforcing their LZW compression patent the designers took the opportunity to improve on some of the limitations of GIF, for example by providing an alpha channel rather than binary transparency.

Is it worth supporting IE though*, their numbers have been falling the last 3 months....

It will be interesting watching the market share numbers over the next few months, or in fact if M$ pull their finger out and do any more development of IE.

Out of interest are you seeing any change in browser usage patterns on your work sites?

Even the clued up managers are sadly aware that IE support is a necessity. You have to bear in mind that IE is still packaged with the vast majority of systems, and the slightly less vast though still large majority of users do not care what browser they use. When designing a website that is intended to be viewed by - and sell things to - the Man In The Street, that man is probably going to be Joe Blow sitting behind his workplace Dell/Compaq PC.

If it helps, the correct term is probably Lowest Common Denominator.
