Bye Bye Bernard

My little Rover Metro, known to some as Bernard, has finally been dragged away to the scrap yard after sitting on my Mum's driveway for about 18 months. (The starter motor went just as [livejournal.com profile] samharber was giving away his Granada, so I figured I could take that car and take some time getting the Rover fixed up ... but then things proved too tricky and expensive to bother, since I found the new starter motor too tricky to fit myself, and even if I got it started the MOT had run out and it wasn't taxed, so it would have cost plenty just to get in saleworthy condition.) The man from the breakers' did not charge us for the privilege, as he said he would when we enquired last year, which means waiting so long has saved us a tenner. WE AM WIN.

He was named Bernard after the Patron Saint of Travellers, because he turned up exactly when I needed a car. He lasted exactly until another one became available. That is spooky.

While being towed out of the drive, he was scraped rather magnificently against the gate. This removed any remaining hankerings I may have had for fixing him up and selling him on. I should probably go and check there's no damage to the (wrought-iron) gates...

The patron saint of travellors was St Christopher, who didn't exist.

St Bernards were named after a monastry in the alps or some such..

Entertaining saints

Saint Barbara - against death by artillery (out of only two 'death by' varients)
Clotilde (and several others) - disappointing children
Bonaventure - bowel disorders
Urban of Langres - fainting
Michael - fencing (possibly with swords but picket is more entertaining)
Alban of Mainz - gravel
Peter Verona - Inquisitors
Agia - lawsuits
Gertrude of Nivelles - mice, fear of
Guy of Anderlecht - outbuildings
Joseph - people who fight against communism
Lydwina of Schiedam - roller skating
Barbara - bomb technicians

Disappointing children: Children who don't come up to scratch, or promising them a trip to Alton Towers and then changing your mind.

So if you ever find yourself on a gravel path in your garden blocked in by a fence, being attacked by artillery fire that is inflaming your bowl disorder and making you faint, wishing you had roller skates to escape or an outbuilding to hide in, while a child holding a mouse looks on and laughs instead of getting help from a local bomb technician, you know who to look to before you sue the lot of them.
