COMPO CORNER

Some may be aware that in the Maelstrom postal pack was notification for an art contest of sorts. Naturally, I have decided I will be entering. Below are the first three drawings I knocked up this evening while Channel 5 showed me the Top 50 Greatest Embarassing Television Moments Of All Time. Hot off the presses - I have not even rubbed out the pencil lines because the ink may not be dry yet. Fuck you, scanner pane!

I don't know which of these I'll submit, if any, but I figured people might be interested.

Tree Tree

It's a dryad, man - design heavily borrowed from DC Comics' Jason Woodrue (The Floronic Man).
Snake Snake

Snakeman ("Ophidian"). I have no idea what their feet actually look like. It is ARTISTIC LICENSE>
Cat Cat

It's supposed to look vaguely like a Wemic Mona Lisa. Really fucking vaguely.

Obviously they're all good, but i think the Dryad might be crossing genre's a little. He looks a bit too 'super hero' if you know what i mean. He almost looks as though he's wearing a mask.

I'd go with the Ophidian, it's very fantasy and is in a more natural, less artificial pose. He's actually doing something, and can be used to illustrate a skill description as well as a racial physrep.

Yes, none of them were wearing masks to protect their secret identity.

Anyway, my comments are supported by all others (except Kmazzy). Go with the Ophidian.

I have no idea what the terms of teh competition are, but i imagine it's a call for more art they can use.

So, static portraits are good, but active poses are better. Go with the Ophidian.

her wemic forearms are too big i think. but the tree is the sex.

not as sexy as tree-you of course though.

On the dryad, it looks as though someone elses head has been stuck on the picture. It just doesn't fit in with the body.

The Ophidian is excellent.

The Wemics body just doesn't look in proportion to the head. The head is most excellent though.

I like the Ophidian best - it's more interesting and more natural looking than the other too, plus it's cool.

I'm a dirty little Ophidian fan. The picture looks more active, even though it obviously isn't. And the dryad needs a new head. The wemic looks sortalike her that plays Lana Lang in TV's Smallville. This isn't a bad or a good thing, just a thing.

Don't draw wemics with clevage. There is enough furry cat p0rn in the IC almenac and rules without you adding to it.

Like the ophidian, the dryad is cool but not quite in genre

See! See!

I realise this is mad, but maybe dressing the wemic more like the mona lisa would underline the point more and make it a picture of a portrait.

[identity profile] wulfboy.livejournal.com 2004-12-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Another Mad idea. Do a series of three or four "famous paintings" but transpose them to the Maelstrom world. Y'know, stuff like the Mona Lisa and The Night Watch and that. It's be clever.

Since I'm not knowledgeable at all of this genre, I'll give my advice from a more technical standpoint. I like the detail you put in the first two best. And I agree with the others that the dynamic stance of the Ophidian (?) is more unique and not so "posed". So, yeah, #2.

Mark W: I'll throw another vote in for the Ophidian, it has a dynamic quality the others don't :). And yeah cat womans upper arms are weirdly long for her body, If you re did it to be more in the style of the Mona Lisa that would be cool.

Ophidian gets my vote. I love the forearms and lower legs of the dryad though. The Mona Wemic doesn't really represent either of the Wemic cultures, though I suppose she could be from the free isles.
