Called several garages today - they were mostly closed. Except for Kwik Fit, who despite their stated goals of "100% customer DELIGHT" do not do duvets starter motors. I was worrying about whether to stay off work tomorrow to take Raj to a garaj in Manchester, or go to work tomorrow and leave Raj at a garaj in Ilkley on Tuesday (while borrowing Mum's car to get to work). Rang Mum, who suggested that since it's the starter motor, if I can get him started I may as well drive to a garaj in Ilkley early tomorrow morning, then borrow her car to drive into work, maybe an hour late. So this is the current plan. It has the benefits that I (a) do not miss a whole day of work and (b) do not have to miss geek on Tuesday evening (as I probably would if I left Raj at the garaj Tuesday, because after driving back and forth between Skipton, Ben Rhydding and the garaj, I would not be interested in driving to Bolton).

So.

Spent much of the day playing Thief2. It is a fun game, since it relies on skill, but not of the "reflexes and murdering" variety.

Yesterday I watched "Sinbad" with the commentary on - there's a whole bunch of people talking about the creative process in the movie, which is the sort of commentary I like. It's also kind of interesting - the movie hangs so well together that I'd imagined it to be a straight script-to-screen thing, but apparently massive amounts of it was developed by the production team. The sea monster fight was at one point going to be with Taurus the bull (until they realised), Kale's entire part was rewritten because the voice actor was so cool ... Spike The Dog was added at a very late stage, apparently, which is why so many of his shots are closeups. There was originally a whole other God (Janus, probably) hanging around as a foil and handy exposition tool for Eris, until they decided that was too cheesy. It was also interesting - to me - how much more CGI there was in it than I thought; a lot of the background characters or long shots of the main characters were 3d-models, in cel-shading style, like stuntmen or body doubles. There was a certain amount of switching back and forth between the two departments, if something was easier to do in 2d or more convenient to have as a 3d render they'd do whatever was most appropriate to the scene. And, my God, they thought about light and darkness a whole lot. They also pointed out and laughed at a few continuity problems, which was cool. So, anyway, I still love that movie.

"100% customer DELIGHT"

I hate the whole "customer delight" thing. I went to a Kwik Fit once (in Radcliffe) to have my old mini's wheels balanced and steering aligned. They were nice guys, polite, friendly, did a good job and didn't rip me off. I would rate them highly.
However, when I was rung the next day by some cheesy guy asking if I'd been "delighted" by the service, I couldn't bring myself to say I was. I mean, I was satisfied, 100%; I told the guy that. Delighted though? I mean, short of receiving a free kitten with every visit, I can honestly say that I'm never likely to be delighted by a visit to a car garage...
