In amongst the teasing photos from the set, the Doctor Who website slipped this little nugget about the cast:

So Rose will have a boyfriend.  I'm guessing either the first story will be about the Doctor's first meeting with Rose, at the end of which she effectively leaves him for the Doctor.  Or the other possibility is that Mickey will be travelling with them, which seems unlikely as it doesn't fit the established Who methodology ... the perception is that the show is about the Doctor travelling with a single female companion (though in fact this arrangement was not by any means constant).  Personally, I'd be in favour of his coming along precisely because it breaks that particular mould.

He'll probably die during the opening credits, as part of the first exchange of automatic gunfire between the Doctor and a police ARV.

Hmm, tragedy? Possible. It puts me in mind of the similar sort of set-up at the opening of Scream of the Shalka, though, which shares a writer with the new series, so I suspect she'll probably just decide it's a dead-end relationship and she doesn't really love him, and that travelling through time and space with a strange man is an excellent idea.

The doctor has had male companions before look at Jamie (Frazier Hines), so it wouldn't be out of context. Though the Who Uber-geeks will probably scream about it, they are already winging about the Doctor's new look which I personally think is hot as hades. They tend to forget that each generation of Doctor has his own look.

I hope at some point, whilst the Doctor and Rose are casually walking down the street, he suddenly leaps on a passer-by, beats them to death and then justifies it with something like "if he'd have lived, the Cybermen would have overrun earth in five years".

It'd make me happy.
