Strange doings at work - mystery rows are appearing in the database.  Frighten, frighten.

Saw Spiderman #2 at the [livejournal.com profile] mrssshhh's birthday.  Giant fun movie, with only two minor criticisms.  #1: Between this movie and I-Robot, Hollywood appears to be run by Luddites.  It's not enough for Octavius to be just mad any more, or even driven to madness over the death of his wife (which, to be fair, has been done), no, now he has to be posessed by the robot arms which are, naturally, evil.  Everybody knows this in advance, even the random reporters at the press conference - "But surely, doctor, if the arms have AI and are wired into your central nervous system won't they take control of you and force you to kill?"  This is obviously a common problem in the Marvel universe, because Otto has installed measures to protect against just such an eventuality.  Because all technology will inevitably turn against its creators.  My other criticism of the movie is the amount of screaming ladies.  No action scene was complete without at least one hapless female shrieking her lungs out.

Still, technophobia aside, Octavius (I refuse to say "Doc Ock", though may occasionally say "Octopus") was superb.  He moved exactly the way I always imagined, and the new segmented arms worked a treat, serving to extend his reach but also collapse down to a convenient size.  For the uninitiated, the comic book tentacles are cylinders with lines, or at best hinges, which always seemed - to me - to be quite limited in range and not particularly dangerous bludgeoning weapons.  These new ones are much heavier and look like they could do some serious damage just by grazing you with the arm, never mind the actual claws with crazy extensible spike.  (Which seems to me a little out of place in scientific apparatus, and isn't that supposed to be where the camera is?)  The one flaw with the setup is that I don't think his puny legs and spine could possibly support that industrial setup, though they seem to have realised this and had a couple of the legs brace him whenever they're doing something particularly strenuous, like catching cars or murdering.  Rattlesnake noise was cheesy, but effective.

Favourite scene: Stopping the train.  From the moment his spider-sense went off with a massive NO SHIT, SHERLOCK - standing at the front of the train hurtling towards a sudden stop above a crowded street - I was giggling all the way.  This may be a personal thing but I always love seeing the scenery damaged instead of the hero; Spidey's arms making these deep depressions in the front of the train as he strained to brake the train with his webbing tickled me pink.  Pure comedy, whilst simultaneously retaining a high amount of tension.  The train scene was also much more heartwarming than the somewhat forced bridge scene in the first movie ("You take on one nooyawker you take on awl of us, dirty terrorist scum!"), though if it was me I would have had one guy take photos of unconscious Parker, then somebody else grab the camera and expose the film or something.  Just to show that not everybody is a decent sort.  Or, you know, smart (maybe they just want a souvenier or something).

Was quite surprised by the sheer number of people who found out about secret identity.  It's like all the major characters know, now.  Even Aunt May delivered a lot of her ambiguous lines with a sort of "I know, but I'm not going to let on that I know, just say things that are very meaningful" sort of emphasis.  Like when Peter's doctor continued to speak of his "friend" when it was obvious he was talking about his own dreams.

Interested to see what SM#3's villain will be, since they've set up The Lizard, Green Goblin Junior and even Crazy Giant Space Wolf Astronaut Jameson.  Suspect it will be Goblin, since Raimi seems to have some sort of mad-on for him even though he's silly.

Speaking of Jameson - I personally would have liked to see the engagement subplot run through the third movie.  If Goblin is the focus of 3, it would have been excellent to have ended things that one scene earlier, with Junior discovering daddy's lab.  The wedding thing seemed a bit rushed, like they had to reward Spiderman with sex.  Though, of course, it does give us the "Tiger" line and (always good) a "Dear John" letter.

EDITED TO ADD: Yeah, also spent much of the movie staring at Maguire's big baby blues. I don't care which way you swing, that's just a thing of beauty. Mmmm.

That's enough movie review for now.  And now, meme.

Is wholly wrong about the pessimism, though I do fear change and don't want to grow up...

Rumour, which doth run round like a barking dog, links Jameson's bland son with the Venom costume, in a Quatermass=style tyhing. Dunno if this is movie or what, but someone mentioned it's apparently one of the rewritten Spiderman continuities without Secret Wars (tm).

mmmmmmmm Maguire....yeah I've been a big fan of his ever since I saw Pleasantville.

I do want to mention that there aren't any elevated trains in New York though. So that was kind of added in an odd way.

Something to do with tye animated series, apparently.
I, for one, want Eddie Brock to still be in it, because he'll hate Spiderman, whilst Jameson will hate Parker.
Whatever.

They've green lite 3 & 4, so we'll almost definately see Venom...

JJ is an astronaut, in the Animated Series he went up into space, got some weird black stuff stuck to the side of his capsule, came back down, there was an accident, S-M came to save him, the black stuff attached to S-M and became the black costume we all know and love, was rejected by Parker (without the help of the FF) and attached to Brock.
