You don't have to ... in the starter kit you get 8 or 9 models, the major characters are worth 70-90 points, and standard teams are made of characters worth 100, 200 or 300 points, so it's possible to play with just the starter pack. Also the size of the miniatures limit the collection factor; they take up a lot more room than Magic cards.
