Finally got in touch with the woman who owns the house next door to [livejournal.com profile] samharber's. Silly bint has gone and had it valued, of all things, and so is putting it on the estate-agent market at £75K. She is now desperate to sell it, and so did not put it on at the full valued price of £78K, but it's considerably more than I was hoping and probably more than I can afford. (Repayments of about £450pcm, apparently, which is more than we're paying at the moment and for a smaller house).

... Actually have done more maths. If I managed to haggle her down to £70K it could be £400pcm from Scottish Widows. Which is what we are paying now. And though it is smaller than where we are now, I would be buying part of a house each month rather than lining a landlady's pocket. And friends are directly next door. Rgh. Now markedly more tempted. But, annoyingly, can't take [livejournal.com profile] bacony to see it before next week, and the woman's going off on hols for a fortnight leaving it estate agent with explicit instructions to sell as soon as possible. Perhaps I will ring estate agent and ask for viewing with them.

Sigh, decisions decisions.

Get a different one Andy. It's way too expensive for a two up two down in a crack-den neighbourhood, even if it is right next door to Sam.

Sweet Jehovah!

There are plenty of other houses in the area for considerably less. That is an insane price to pay....

Hell... I should just shell out 5 grand, get some builders in to tart the place up and then sell... I'll have doubled my money more or less...

When you're wroking out what you can afford each month, remember that you'll need to pay building insurance and cover the costs of any necessary repairs etc - that stuff's included in your current rent

Also, trend seems to be that interest rates are going to rise in the short-medium term to try and control the housing market. If you buy now at your uppper limit you are asking for trouble.
