Music news

Those who've been paying attention may remember I've been looking for some music in the same genre as the Powerpuff Girls soundtrack for a while now.  I was thus pleased to see James L Venable - composer for that noble production, as well as its bastard cousin Samurai Jack - has released an original album.  Though I seriously love his PPG soundtrack, most of the album samples provided on his site leave me a little cold... it could be that it's the visual associations that make me love the PPG theme so, but I think it's more that he's composing for an album rather than a soundtrack, so is aiming for something more drawn-out and slow-paced.  Apart from Party Boy and Jack In The Club, the latter of which I suspect is from that Samurai Jack episode where he's ... in a club.  (Seriously.)  Now that I think of it, Move the Top is largely from another SJ episode - the one with the cross-dressing Aku and the desert travel montage.

According to the Amazon page those are the only eight tracks on the album, though he's also slipped a couple of his PPG/SJ demos in there.  I don't think I'll be buying it, it's nice but not quite snappy enough - there's about a 50% hit rate in those minute-long samples but I don't think it'll pan out well to a whole album.  Maybe I'll nab bits of it illegally and see if the full tracks are any improvement.
