Did I ever say what I thought of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materia trilogy? I liked a lot of the ideas (Daemons, for one), and all the way through there was a definite sense of Big Things about to happen, Big Secrets about to be revealed. Unfortunately this carried on right to the very end of the book, which is not so good. It promised Secrets of the Cosmos (at least, secrets of that cosmos) and delivered sloppy fan-fiction. None of it was really explained. I would have appreciated a scene at the end with a couple of the characters summarising, discussing and generally expositing. "Ah, so, it turned out that the temptation was this, and it saved the world because of that..."

It's not always necessary to explain everything (doing so can destroy the sense of wonder), but it had been promised and was not delivered. I have the vague suspicion that the reason people kept saying "She has something to do and must never know" is that the author hadn't thought of it.

Nice idea, poorly executed.
